A Comorian-flagged container ship, “Amnah”, tilted and subsequently capsized in the port of Ambali, Turkey.
The accident occurred at around 4 a.m. local time on the 23rd, when the ship was unloading cargo and gradually tilted and eventually capsized due to a load imbalance on the vessel.
“Amnah”, with a capacity of 508 TEU, was built in 1996 and was originally owned by the Russian shipping company FESCO, but was renamed in October of this year from “FESCO Nagaevo”. Currently, it is operating for the Turkish shipping company Sidra Line.
Ten of the 15 crew members on board were reportedly rescued, while the remaining five jumped into the water. One of the crew members sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Turkey’s shipping department posted on social media that in order to control the risk of pollution, floating barriers have been deployed around the ship, and a rescue operation has been launched under the coordination of the Port Authority.
It is stated that the accident is still under investigation and a final report is expected to be submitted after the completion of salvage and technical assessment.
