A worker in his 30s fell to his death from the dock in an accident at South Korea’s HD Hyundai Mipo.
According to HD Hyundai Mipo and local police on the 19th, a 39-year-old worker at HD Hyundai Mipo fell from a height of about 12 meters at the dock at about 4:50 p.m. on the 18th. The worker was taken to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery, but died at about 3:30 a.m. on the 19th.
At the time of the accident, the worker was reportedly on a dock using a rope to hoist work items to the ground. The worker was wearing a helmet and safety belt, but failed to fasten the safety rope to the railing, causing the fall. The police are investigating the people involved in the shipyard to find out the exact cause of the accident.
This accident is the first serious accident that has occurred at HD Hyundai Mipo in eight years since November 2016.
HD Hyundai Mipo said on the same day: “We pray for the victims who passed away in the accident and express our sincere condolences and sympathy to their families. We will fully cooperate with the accident investigation and provide support. At the same time, we will actively assist the police and relevant departments to find out the cause of the accident and take measures to prevent similar accidents from happening again.”
According to statistics, a total of 18 fatal accidents occurred in South Korean shipyards in 2024 up to September 9, resulting in the deaths of 22 workers. The shipyards involved in the accident include Hanwha Ocean, Samsung Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Samho, as well as HSG Seongdong Shipbuilding, Dae Sun Shipbuilding and K Shipbuilding. Among them, Hanwha Ocean had the highest number of fatalities, reaching seven.
In terms of accident types, there were 4 fires and explosions, 3 falls from heights, 2 drownings, 3 crushings, 2 fevers (1 speculated), 1 unknown cause, and 3 diseases (acute myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular system, etc.).
