On December 13, China Oilfield Services Limited’s (COSL) LNG powered offshore supply vessel(OSV) “Haiyang Shiyou 545” completed a major reconstruction of its new energy battery energy storage system. Witnessed by the Ship Division, China Classification Society, Maritime Safety Administration and the shipyard, the vessel successfully completed its sea trial, marking the successful upgrade of the first new energy battery hybrid OSV in China.
It is understood that as early as 2022, COSL paid close attention to the development of battery energy storage technology in ship applications. At that time, domestic applications began to be used in small batches on tourist boats, inland river boats, and other scenarios that were convenient for charging or suitable for battery swapping. Sea-going ships only had sporadic applications on port operation ships. The technology was not yet fully mature, and application scenarios needed to be developed.
In 2023, the COSL Shipbuilding Division determined that this technology was suitable for the operating conditions of the division’s fleet through preliminary research, and then set up a scientific and technological project entitled “Application of Battery Energy Storage Technology on OSVs”.
On November 7, 2024, the upgrading project of retrofitting new energy battery hybrid power to the ship “Haiyang Shiyou 545” was kicked off at the dock of Zhongnan Shipyard in Maoming, Guangdong Province, China. COSL overcame the problems of narrow working space, high precision dismantling and installation, complex EMS (Energy Management System) retrofitting, etc., and finally ensured that the project was completed on schedule.
The hybrid upgrading project of “Haiyang Shiyou 545” is a successful practice of COSL to actively explore the road of green development. It not only brings COSL a double harvest of economic and environmental benefits, but also provides valuable experience and inspiration for the whole OSV industry in the application of new energy and green transformation.
In the future, with the continuous progress of new energy technology and the continuous promotion of related policies, OSV industry will certainly accelerate on the green and low-carbon course and make greater contribution to the environmental protection and sustainable development of offshore oilfields.
