On December 13, Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC) and Shanghai Jiaotong University signed a design contract for the “deep-sea all-weather floating research facility” in Shanghai.
The deep-sea large science facility is a national “14th Five-Year Plan” major scientific and technological infrastructure construction project responsible for the construction of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which is the world’s first ultra-large deep-sea self-propelled scientific research platform.
Unlike existing scientific research or engineering vessels, this facility will become a flagship for promoting the future development of global marine science and technology after its completion due to its huge carrying capacity and ability to adapt to extreme marine environments.
The construction of this facility will help to upgrade high-end marine equipment, especially major marine scientific and technological infrastructure. It is of great significance for promoting breakthroughs in scientific research in the marine field, accelerating the construction of capabilities to understand, develop and protect the ocean, accelerating the fundamental transformation in breadth and depth from near shallow seas to deep seas, and realizing the strategy of building a strong maritime nation as soon as possible.
The signing of the design contract marks the beginning of the implementation phase of the project, and MARIC is striving to make this facility another great weapon to serve the national ocean strategy after the Dream.
