COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) completed a rotor sail retrofitting project

On December 8, the bulk carrier “Youduhai” set sail after COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) successfully completed the installation of energy-saving rotor sails. This is the third rotor sail retrofitting completed by COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) in this year after “Camellia Dream” and “Max”.

“Youduhai” is 229 meters long and 38 meters wide. The rotor sail installed this time is located at the bow, with an outer cylinder diameter of 4.5 meters, a top disk diameter of 6.6 meters and a maximum design speed is 225 rpm. Without additional power from shaft propellers, the vessel can reach a speed of 2.4 knots by virtue of wind energy. Combined with the traditional shaft propellers, it can significantly reduce the fuel consumption of the vessel, minimize the carbon emission, and help the shipping industry in its green and low-carbon transformation.

So far, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) has successfully completed the installation of 8 rotor sails on three vessels. The form of rotor sails covers vertical and folding type, and the installation scheme includes vertical lifting, horizontal lifting and combined operation lifting, and also realizes multiple scenarios such as quay gantry lifting and floating crane installation, which provides all-around solution and valuable construction experience for the same type of vessel conversion.

The successful installation and delivery of the rotor sail of the vessel “Youdu Hai” further consolidates the dominant position of COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) in the field of green ship retrofitting, and injects a new impetus for the green development of the industry.
