According to Hengli Heavy Industries, on December 5, the company signed an order for 10 LNG dual-fuel 24,000TEU container ships with a well-known European liner company, with a contract value of nearly RMB 17 billion (about US$ 235 million). This is another batch of orders for ultra-large container ships signed by Hengli Heavy Industries following the order in September this year.
It is reported that the well-known liner company is a long-term important strategic partner of Hengli Heavy Industries Group. The signing of the project marks the transformation and upgrading of Hengli Heavy Industries’ products, refreshes the undertaking record of shipbuilding green and environmental protection ship types, proves that Hengli Heavy Industries has once again gained the recognition of the world’s top shipowners, and lays a solid foundation for the future to continue to lead the industry in the development of the competition for high value-added projects.
According to previous reports, in September of this year, Hengli Heavy Industries signed a contract with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) for the construction of ten 21,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel ultra-large container ships, which are expected to be delivered by 2027. This is Hengli Heavy Industries’ first real-ship order in the container ship market and also its first dual-fuel powered ship order. Based on market conditions, the total value of these ten new ships is approximately US$ 2.73 billion (around RMB 19.8 billion).
Together with the latest order, Hengli Heavy Industries has received orders for 20 LNG dual-fuel ultra-large container ships this year, with a total value of about RMB 36.8 billion.

Since the first phase of Hengli Heavy Industries’ project became fully operational in January 2023, shipbuilding orders have been scheduled up to 2028, and more than 30 vessels are under construction. The first built ship was delivered half a year ahead of schedule in April this year, and the first marine engine was officially delivered in September. There will be 12 ships launched this year, including 300,000 DWT VLCCs.
The second phase of the project started construction in August and has now entered the peak installation period. The first batch of workshops will be put into use at the end of this month. After the first and second phases are fully put into production next year, Hengli Heavy Industries will have an annual production capacity of 2.3 million tons of steel and 180 engines, and will achieve full coverage of four kinds of dual-fuel engines: LNG, LPG, methanol, and ammonia.
On December 4th, the Hengli Green Ship Development Conference was held in Dalian. At the conference, Chen Jianhua, Chairman of Hengli Group, stated that Hengli will adhere to the highest standards, strictest requirements, and fastest speed to innovate design, lean manufacturing, and deliver on schedule ultra-large crude carriers, ultra-large container ships, ultra-low temperature vessels, LNG carriers, and other high-value-added green ships. The goal is to fully build a first-class shipbuilding and marine engineering equipment manufacturing base that is digitalized, intelligent, and green.
