China’s second domestically-built large cruise ship hull construction enters the final sprint stage

In November 2024, the hull structure construction for the second large cruise ship H1509, undertaken by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (“SWS”), entered the sprint phase. On November 7th, the X3 block of the H1509 ship was successfully installed. From November 19th to 25th, SWS consecutively completed the installation of seven blocks within seven days, marking the successful completion of November’s installation work and exceeding the monthly plan with three additional blocks installed. The overall installation progress in the dock has now exceeded 84%.

The blocks installed this month cover critical parts of the hull structure, including the X3 block for the accommodation area on Deck 5 at the bow, the J1 and T1 blocks with balconies, the M2 block for the stern dining area, the H4 and D1 blocks for the bow and stern mooring areas, as well as the L5 and L6 blocks for the water park area.

The SWS project team adheres to the lean production concept and strengthens cross-departmental collaboration. Before the transfer and installation of the M2 and J1 blocks from Platform 8, the project team conducted a simulated installation to cut away excess material at the joining surfaces, performed a Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and prepared contingency plans for potential situations during the transfer and installation process. They enhanced coordination between the platform and dock personnel during the lifting process to improve overall block lifting efficiency. The blocks were successfully transferred from Platform 8 to the designated installation location on Platform 4 using two flatbed trucks in coordination.

Currently, the SWS project team is strictly adhering to the plan to advance the dock installation work of the H1509 ship. They are fully focused on progressing the three main work lines in the bow, stern, and engine room areas, moving towards the goal of achieving the full structural integration of the ship.
