Beibu Gulf port officially approved for expansion to accommodate two 200,000-ton container ships

Recently, the berth expansion project of Beibu Gulf Port was approved by the Development and Reform Commission of the Autonomous Region, marking another breakthrough for Beibu Gulf Port in enhancing the comprehensive service capacity of containers and coping with the global trend of larger ship size.

The expanded berths 9 and 10 are the first berths in the Beibu Gulf region built to berth 200,000-ton container ships. They are also the second phase of the Beibu Gulf Port Qinzhou Automated Terminal project, the world’s first “U”-shaped process layout.

After the completion of the berth expansion project, the total length of the berth shoreline will reach 991 meters. The current two 100,000-ton container berths will be upgraded to two 200,000-ton container berths, which is expected to add an annual container capacity of 400,000 TEUs, and can meet the needs of two 200,000-ton container ships berthing in parallel.

The project will further optimize the container transportation routes from Beibu Gulf Port to Europe, America and other ocean regions, effectively reduce the overall logistics costs, help Qinzhou Port transform and upgrade into a vital container port in southwest of China, and provide solid support for promoting high-quality industrial development in the western region.

At the same time, it efficiently connects with the Pinglu Canal, laying a solid foundation for building a complete and efficient Qinzhou port area container river-sea intermodal collection and distribution system, and realizing the deep integration and coordinated progress of port functions and regional economic development.
