ADNOC L&S Takes Delivery of First Large Mark III Flex Membrane LNG Carrier Built in China

On November 25, Jiangnan Shipyard, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), in collaboration with China Shipbuilding Trading (CSTC), named and delivered the “AL SHELILA”, China’s first 175,000 cbm Mark III Flex membrane LNG carrier, two months ahead of schedule. “AL SHELILA” was built for ADNOC Logistics & Services (ADNOC L&S), the shipping and maritime logistics subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).

In 2022, Jiangnan Shipyard signed contracts with ADNOC L&S for the construction of six 175,000 cbm LNG carriers, making Jiangnan Shipyard the first Chinese shipyard to undertake the construction of large LNG carriers with Mark III membrane technology. This project also marked the first order from a leading international oil and gas company in the field of large LNG carriers for China, pioneering direct cooperation between Chinese shipyards and international oil and gas companies in the construction of large LNG carriers.

“AL SHELILA” is the first LNG carrier in the project, with a construction period of only 19 months from start to delivery. This marks Jiangnan Shipyard’s first successful delivery of a large LNG carrier, establishing a new milestone and adding a new force to the “Made in China” label in the field of LNG carrier design and construction.

This type of LNG carrier is Jiangnan Shipyard’s first generation of 175,000 cbm Mark III Flex membrane LNG carriers (“LNG JUMBO”), designed and developed independently in line with the latest international LNG carrier design concepts. It has an overall length of 298.5 meters, a beam of 46 meters, a depth of 26.5 meters, and a design draft of 11.5 meters.

The LNG carrier meets the latest regulations and standards, featuring mainstream, reliable, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly characteristics, with comprehensive economic performance indicators reaching international advanced levels.
