Samsung Heavy Industries Receives Order for Four 16,000 TEU Container Ships from Asian Shipowner

On November 25, Samsung Heavy Industries announced that it has signed a contract with an Asian shipowner for the construction of four 16,000 TEU container ships for December 2027 delivery.

The total value of the four new ships is US$786 million, with a single ship cost of about US$196.5 million.

Including this contract, Samsung Heavy Industries has received orders for a total of 33 new ships this year, with a total value of about US$6.8 billion, achieving 70% of this year’s target of US$9.7 billion. These include 22 LNG carriers, 2 VLACs, 1 shuttle tanker, 4 Suezmax tankers and 4 container ships.

Due to the strengthening of environmental regulations in the shipping industry, the demand for replacing old container ships is expected to continue increasing. According to the latest forecast by Clarkson, from 2024 to 2027, it is expected that 53 container ships with capacities exceeding 12,000 TEU will be ordered each year.

Samsung Heavy Industries emphasized, “We will do our best to achieve our order targets, focusing on LNG carriers, FLNG with leading competitiveness, and environmentally friendly ship types.”
