Hainan Strait Shipping to Invest in Two New Ro-Ro Passenger Vessels to Replace Old Fleet

On November 19th, Hainan Strait Shipping announced two notices regarding its subsidiaries each building a new ro-ro passenger vessel. These new vessels will replace the existing old ships and be put into operation on the Haikou to Xuwen route.

The announcement disclosed that the Hainan Strait Shipping board of directors agreed that its subsidiary Qiongzhou Strait (Guangdong) Ferry Transportation would invest RMB 260 million to build a green and intelligent ro-ro passenger vessel to replace the existing old ships and put them into operation on the Haikou-Xuwen route. After feasibility analysis, under the assumed operating conditions, the new vessel is expected to achieve an annual operating income of RMB 111 million and an average annual operating profit of RMB 36.561 million.

At the same time, the board of directors agreed that the company’s subsidiary Qiongzhou Strait (Hainan) Ferry Transportation would invest RMB 260 million to build a green and intelligent ro-ro passenger vessel to replace the existing old vessel and put them into operation on the Haikou-Xuwen route. After feasibility analysis, the new vessel is expected to achieve an annual operating income of RMB 111 million and an average annual operating profit of RMB 36.561 million.

According to the announcement, the new vessels are designed as steel green intelligent ro-ro passenger vessels for coastal service in domestic waters, capable of carrying passengers and various small vehicles. Each vessel can accommodate approximately 1,250 passengers and is designed according to domestic regulations as a Class III, Category 3 passenger vessel. The stability, fire protection, and lifesaving equipment are designed according to Class I passenger ship standards. The hull structure strength is designed to meet the requirements for passenger ro-ro ships operating in offshore areas.

The main operators of the Haikou to Xuwen route across the Qiongzhou Strait include Qiongzhou Ferry, Hainan Xianglong Shipping, and Yuehai Railway Company. As of now, there are a total of 53 passenger ro-ro vessels operating in Hainan Strait Shipping, with a total deadweight of 125,000 tons, a total of 2,519 standard car spaces, and a total passenger capacity of 48,000 people. Among them, Guangdong-Hainan Railway Company operates four large train-passenger ro-ro vessels on the railway transport route. The remaining 49 passenger ro-ro vessels include 2 small vessels, 6 medium-sized vessels, and 41 large vessels (including 17 with a deadweight of over 10,000 tons).
