Evergreen Marine to Invest in 11 24,000 TEU Container Ships

Taiwan Province shipowner Evergreen Marine has launched a tender for 11 24,000 TEU ultra-large methanol dual-fuel newbuild containerships.

Evergreen Marine has reportedly requested quotes from six shipyards, including South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai and Hanwha Ocean, China’s Jiangnan Shipbuilding and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, as well as Japan’s Imabari Shipbuilding.

The new ships could cost as much as $265 million each, with possible delivery dates in 2028 and 2029.

Evergreen Marine’s last big order came in July last year, when the shipping giant ordered 24 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships at Samsung Heavy Industries (16) and Nihon Shipyard (8) at a cost of about $196 million each.

Up to now, there is no shipping company ordering 24,000 TEU container ships this year. Only France’s CMA CGM has placed an order for 24,000 TEU ultra-large container ships in the past two years. The company ordered 10 24,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in June last year, making it the largest single newbuilding contract for Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in the 16 years since it was listed on the stock exchange.
