Philippine government invests in new shipyard

The Philippine Defense Secretary recently confirmed that the Philippine government has initiated investments in the construction of new shipyards and related facilities to support and maintain the Philippine Navy’s newest warships.

Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro said the new facilities will be used primarily to service the 10 new warships the Navy will receive from overseas shipyards over the next three years.

The 10 ships to be received include two guided missile frigates, six offshore patrol ships and two landing crafts. The frigates and patrol ships are being built by South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, while the landing crafts are being built by Indonesia’s PAL Indonesia.

Gilberto Teodoro said the new facility will support the 10 ships and any ships that the Philippine Navy may order in the future.

The construction plan is said to be part of the Philippines’ Self-Reliant Defense Posture Revitalization Act, which aims to develop the Philippines’ ability to independently manufacture defense equipment.
