South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries announced on October 31 that it has signed a contract with an Asian shipping company to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier worth 358.2 billion won (approximately US$259 million). It is expected to be delivered in June 2027.
Including the latest contract, Samsung Heavy Industries has received orders for 25 ships worth US$5.6 billion so far this year, achieving 58% of its US$9.7 billion annual target. By ship type, it include 22 LNG carriers, 2 VLACs and 1 shuttle tanker. Samsung Heavy currently has an order book of US $31.9 billion and has secured its workload for the next three years.
Samsung Heavy Industries said, “It is expected that orders for 70 new LNG carriers will be generated annually in the future worldwide, and we will strive to achieve this year’s order target through LNG carriers and environmentally friendly container ships that are currently under negotiation.”
The shipbuilder previously said that its net profit this year increased more than doubled from 68.1 billion won to 153.2 billion won from the end of September last year, mainly due to an increase in orders for high-value-added ships such as LNG carriers and FLNG.
