Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk place orders for 28 LNG dual-fuel container ships from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding

Shipping giants Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk are still expanding their order book. The latest news says that the two shipowners will place an order for 28 LNG dual-fuel container ships with a value of more than US$5.8 billion (approximately RMB 41.3 billion) from China’s largest private shipbuilder, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding.

Hapag-Lloyd has placed an order with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding for up to 18 17,000 TEU container ships.

Earlier this month, shipbroker Intermodal reported that Hapag-Lloyd has signed a total of 20+10 LNG dual-fuel container ship contracts with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and New Times Shipbuilding. Among them, a contract of 10+5 17,000TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships was signed with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, with each ship costing US$210 million; and a contract of 10+5 9,200TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships was signed with New Times Shipbuilding, with each ship costing US$140 million. According to TradeWinds, Hapag-Lloyd has increased the confirmed order of 10 ships from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding to 12, and increased the number of optional ships to 6, that is, the total number has increased from the original 10+5 to 12+6. If all 18 ships are effective, the total amount of this large order will reach US$3.78 billion, or about RMB 27 billion.

Maersk has also placed an order for 10 16,000TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, which will be delivered between 2027 and 2029, according to industry sources.

Maersk is shifting its new shipbuilding strategy from methanol fuel to LNG fuel, and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has become the third shipyard to build LNG dual-fuel NeoPanamax container ships for Maersk. Earlier this month, it was reported that Maersk will place orders for more than 30 LNG dual-fuel container ships from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, New Times Shipbuilding and Hanwha Ocean.

Maersk’s shipbuilding contracts with New Times Shipbuilding and Hanwha Ocean were signed in early October. Specifically, Maersk signed a contract with New Times Shipbuilding for six 16,000TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships, with a price of approximately US$200 million each, and is expected to be delivered in 2028.

Signed a contract with Hanwha Marine for six 15,000TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships, with a price of approximately US$208 million each, scheduled to be delivered before the end of 2028. The two shipyards also have options for 4 to 6 ships in their contracts.

It is not known whether the 10 ships ordered by Maersk from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding include options. The previous news was 6+4 ships. The cost of each ship ordered is about US$202 million. If all 10 ships are in effect, the total price will reach US$2.02 billion, or about RMB 14.3 billion.

Well-known agency Alphaliner predicts that this year will be a record year for container ship orders. As of mid-October, the total number of new container ship orders was 264, equivalent to 3.11 million TEUs. Brokerage company MB Shipbroking said that based on the projects under negotiation, it is expected that more than 400,000 TEUs of container ship orders will be added this year.
