World’s first 14,000TEU container ship’s methanol dual-fuel retrofitting completed in China

On October 29th, AP Dockyard has successfully held a completion and delivery ceremony of the world’s first 14,000 TEU container vessel, “MAERSK HALIFAX”, for the methanol dual-fuel retrofit.

“MAERSK HALIFAX” is 367.6 meters long and 53.5 meters wide. The retrofitting project involves the the main engine retrofitting, the installation of methanol tanks in sections, and the lengthening of the overall length of the vessel.

After the retrofitting, the vessel will be able to operate on oil and methanol fuels. As Maersk’s first container vessel methanol dual-fuel retrofitting project in the world, the implementation of this retrofitting project will not only help Maersk achieve its 2040 net zero emission goal, but also test the technical experience accumulated by AP Dockyard in green retrofitting.

The successful completion and delivery of “HALIFAX” methanol dual-fuel retrofit project represents a significant endeavor and breakthrough in green ship repair technology by AP Dockyard. This achievement marks another important milestone for AP in high-tech, high-value-added repairs, further establishing a new benchmark for promoting sustainable development in global shipping.

Mr. Ahmed Hassan stated that the successful completion and delivery of this retrofit project was attributed to the close collaboration among Maersk, AP, and MAN. Together, they faced challenges head-on to ensure the high quality and efficiency of the project. The retrofitted vessel will significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions, demonstrating the commitment of all three companies to low-carbon environmental principles. This initiative will also lead the shipping industry towards green innovation and sustainable development.
