On October 24, 2024, Qingdao McDermott Wuchuan Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “QMW”) achieved a historic milestone as the “Xiang An Kou” semi-submersible vessel embarked with the Marjan GCP topside loaded, marking the successful completion of the onshore construction and commissioning of the Marjan PKG-1 GOSP-4 Gas Compression Platform (GCP) undertaken by QMW.
Located in the Arabian Gulf of Saudi Arabia, the Marjan oil & gas field serves as a crucial offshore energy base. As a key component of the Marjan Increment Program (MIP), the Marjan PKG-1 Project aims to boost crude oil production from 500,000 barrels per day (BPD) to 800,000 BPD and handle approximately 2.2 billion standard cubic feet per day (BSCFD) of associated gas through the addition of new offshore facilities. Executed by EPCIC contractor McDermott, the project encompasses six mega fixed offshore platforms. Among them, the GCP undertaken by QMW is the largest and most complex topside, tasked with the critical responsibility of compressing and exporting associated gases.
Weighing approximately 20,000 metric tons and comprising five decks, the GCP platform was loaded onto the X-class fast transport vessel (FTV) “Xiang An Kou” using the skidding method and will be installed on an 8-leg jacket using the float-over method. The platform integrates 132 sets of mechanical equipment, including five two-stage compressors, 230K Dia-Inch piping and 405KM cables with a maximum allowable working pressure of 160 bar and a total installed power of 90 MW. Initiated in February 2022 and completed in October 2024, the construction of the GCP topside spanned 32 months.
With over 8.5 million incident-free work-hours accumulated, the project’s Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) remains at zero. The structural and piping welding repair rates are only 0.10% and 0.64%, respectively, significantly better than the project standards (<0.20% and <1.8%, respectively). These outstanding achievements not only exceeded the expectations of Saudi Aramco and McDermott for the GCP platform but also fully demonstrated QMW's exceptional capabilities in project management, HSE, quality, and construction.
On top of successful delivery and outstanding accomplishments of Marjan GCP topside, QMW also successfully passed Saudi Aramco’s rigorous audit and was proudly recognized as the permanent qualified supplier of Saudi Aramco in September 2024. This not only showcases QMW’s exceptional capabilities but also strengthens its prominent position in the global marine engineering industry.
