CMES-Tech Receives First Commercial Order for Domestic Mobile Rotor Sails

CSIC (China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation) Shanghai Marine Energy Saving Technology Development Co., Ltd (CMES-Tech) announced on October 1 that it has signed first domestic order for its self-developed, fully localized and innovative energy-saving device, 5m-class wind power rotor sails.

The rotor sails will be applied to large bulk carriers “Yue Dian 83”, making a substantial breakthrough in commercial application.

According to CMES-Tech, there were three domestic and foreign suppliers participating in the bidding. The technical solution provided by CMES-Tech beat the competitors in terms of energy-saving effect, cost-effectiveness, safety, reliability, adaptability, and after-sales maintenance service, and successfully won the bid.

The rotor sails system has a diameter of 5m, with a maximum operating speed of 180 revolutions per minute and a maximum thrust of more than 300kN. The system is equipped with a removable unit that is fully adapted for loading and unloading 80,000 DWT bulk carriers.

It is reported that CMES-Tech’s localized rotor sails can effectively solve the bottleneck problem of energy saving, emission reduction and carbon intensity index rating improvement for 80,000 DWT and above carriers.

After the installation of 2 sets of rotor sails on the bulk carrier “ Yue Dian 83”, it can achieve energy saving effect of 5%-8% depending on the route, which is expected to save about 2 tons of fuel oil/day and reduce the marine greenhouse gas emission of 1,600 tons per year.
