TMS Cardiff names a LNG carrier

Samsung Heavy Industries recently held a naming ceremony for the Athos LNG, a 174,000 cbm liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier built for TMS Cardiff Gas, a subsidiary of Greek shipowner George Economou.

“Athos LNG” is the first in a series of new LNG carriers to be built by TMS Cardiff Gas at Samsung Heavy Industries. With a cargo capacity of 174,000 cbm and equipped with MEGA propulsion, shaft generators and air lubrication systems, the new LNG carrier demonstrates the shipowner’s commitment to innovation and sustainability for a greener tomorrow.

“Athos LNG” has been chartered on a multi-year charter with Osaka Gas International Transport, a subsidiary of Osaka Gas, a leading global transportation company.

Earlier this year, TMS Cardiff Gas also ordered two 88,000 cbm Very Large Liquid Ammonia Carriers (VLACs) from Samsung Heavy Industries, with a total value of KRW 315 billion (approx. US$234 million), which are expected to be delivered sequentially by November 2027. And this is the first order Samsung Heavy Industries has received in 2024.

In related news, TMS Cardiff Gas has signed a Favored Customer Contract (FCC) with Singaporean offshore giant Seatrium (formerly Sembcorp Marine).Under the contract, Seatrium will be responsible for the conversion of 17 LNG carriers in Singapore, with the aim of improving the performance of the vessels in terms of sustainability, cost efficiency and timely delivery.
