Hapag-Lloyd to order $4.2 billion dual-fuel powered container ships from China

Hapag-Lloyd has decided to order a total of up to 24 LNG dual-fuel powered container ships from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and New Times Shipbuilding, with a total value of more than $4.2 billion, according to trade wind news.

Specifically, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding will undertake the construction of up to 12 17,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel powered container ships, each at a price of $200 million to $210 million. Based on this calculation, the 12 new ships are worth $2.4 billion to $2.52 billion. New Times Shipbuilding will build up to 12 9,200TEU LNG dual-fuel powered container ships at a price of more than $140 million each, making the 12 ships worth $1.68 billion. Most of these new ships will be delivered from 2028 to 2029.

It is reported that Hapa-Lloyd has attracted many shipyards including Jiangnan Shipbuilding, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry co.,ltd.(DSIC), Guangzhou Shipbuilding International, New Times Shipbuilding, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, and two Korean shipbuilding shibuilders, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean (formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, DSME). The latest news shows that two Chinese private shipping companies beat strong competitors and finally won this big order.

Sources said that Hapag-Lloyd has not yet signed a formal shipbuilding contract with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and New Times Shipbuilding, and is currently finalizing contract details with the two shipbuilders.

As early as August this year, it was reported that Hapag-Lloyd planned to order up to 30 LNG dual-fuel powered container ships and made large-scale inquiries to shipbuilders. The total value of the order disclosed at the time was $5.4 billion, comprising 10+5 17,000 TEU and 10+5 9,200 TEU LNG dual-fuel powered container ships.

If this shipbuilding contract is finalized, it will be Hapag-Lloyd’s first container ship order as a shipowner in three years. Hapag-Lloyd’s last order dates back to Decoember 2020, when it signed 6 + 6 23,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel powered container ships with DSME, with an option for another six container ships effective in June 2021, at a reported cost of about $165 million each.
