Changhong International cut steel for MSC’s two 11,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships

On September 25, Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard (Changhong International) successfully cut steel for the ninth and tenth 11,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships for the world’s largest container liner company, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

This series of container ships are independently developed by CIMC Ocean Engineering Design & Research Institute (CIMC ORIC), with full intellectual property rights. It adopts double-island layout and is equipped with the largest C-type LNG fuel storage tank of the same class, and the endurance of both LNG mode and bunker mode can meet the demand of single round-trip on classic China-Europe or China-US routes.

The 11,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships is characterized by cleanliness, environmental protection and low carbon emission. Compared with the existing ships of the same type, it can save about 5% of fuel, and its Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) can be reduced by about 40% compared with the strict Phase III emission baseline of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The design is technologically forward-looking, not only adopting dual-power propulsion in the form of LNG and conventional fuel oil, but also adopting the industry’s most cutting-edge ammonia fuel “Ready” design.

The series of ships have an overall length of 335 meters, a beam of 45.6 meters, a depth of 25 meters, a design speed of 20 knots, and the two ships kicked off this time are classed by BV.

Currently, Changhong International hand held orders for 32 newbuildings of MSC, all of which are 10,000 TEU class LNG dual-fuel container ships.
