BW LNG’s 4th 174,000 cbm LNG carrier kicked off construction

Norwegian gas shipping company BW LNG has announced on social media that its fourth 174,000 cbm liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, has officially started construction at Hanwha Ocean (formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, DSME).

In 2022, BW LNG confirmed orders for four 174,000 cbm LNG carriers from then DSME, with the first unit commencing construction in November 2023 and all four LNG carriers expected to be delivered in 2025.

This series of LNG carriers is equipped with MAN B&W MEGI dual-fuel engines, a complete re-liquefaction system, an air lubrication system and a shaft generator for better fuel consumption and lower emissions.

Earlier this year, BW LNG acquired two LNG carriers from Swedish shipowner Stena Bulk to further expand its fleet for an undisclosed sum. The vessels, named Stena Crystal Sky and Stena Clear Sky, both with a cargo capacity of 174,000 cbm, are Hanwha Ocean’s 2011-built triple-fuel diesel-electric (TFDE) vessels, renamed BW ENN Crystal Sky and BW Clear Sky, respectively, and will be delivered directly to TotalEnergies and ENN Energy.

To date, BW LNG’s owned fleet has reached 34 vessels, including four Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs) and four newbuildings under construction at Hanwha Ocean. The four FSRUs are named BW Batangas, BW Integrity, BW Magna and BW Tatiana. Last year, BW LNG sold its 2015-built FSRU BW Singapore to Italy’s Snam for about $400 million.
