Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced on Sept. 19 that it has received the world’s first conceptual certification for a floating blue ammonia production facility from American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
Blue ammonia is a clean ammonia made by capturing and storing carbon dioxide emitted during ammonia production.
As carbon regulations in the shipping industry continue to tighten, blue ammonia is attracting attention as a clean energy source. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced carbon neutrality by 2050 at the 80th Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC80) meeting in July this year.
Floating blue ammonia production facilities are said to be able to overcome constraints such as land shortage and have a short construction period, so they are regarded as next-generation eco-friendly facilities.
Earlier this month, KBR announced that it has been awarded a conceptual study contract for floating blue ammonia production from SHI. The award is part of SHI’s diversification in the ocean energy business, with a focus on maritime technology. The study will utilize KBR’s innovative blue ammonia technology, suitable for offshore production, and leverage SHI’s expertise in the design of mega floating vessels.
