In addition to the additional order from its parent company, Hengli Heavy Industries has signed a contract with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) for the construction of 10 21,000 TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel powered ultra-large containerships, which are expected to be delivered in 2027.
As early as in August this year, MSC and Hengli Heavy Industries have signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement, both sides will carry out all-round cooperation in new shipbuilding, supporting engines, ship repair, retrofit and other business areas.
The value of the order has not been announced yet. However, with reference to Clarkson data, the newbuilding price of ultra-large container ships (22,000TEU-24,000TEU) is US$273 million, and by this estimation, the total order value of MSC’s 10 newbuildings is about US$2.73 billion.
It is worth noting that Hengli Heavy Industries has “partially” entered the container ship construction market earlier. The company is building a number of 15,000 TEU container ships TERA section for the South Korean’s Samsung Heavy Industries.
This is the first time that Hengli Heavy Industries has won a whole real ship order in the container ship market, and also its first order for a dual-fuel powered ship.
Including the order from Hengli Heavy Industries, MSC has ordered a total of 46+4 LNG dual-fuel powered large container ships from a number of Chinese shipbuilders this year.
These include 6 19,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel powered container ships at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, 8 + 4 11,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel powered container ships at Jinglu Shipyard, 12 19,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel powered container ships at Zhoushan Changhong International, and 10 21,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel powered container ships at Jiangsu Hantong Ship Heavy Industry.
