The death toll from the explosion at SN Corporation’s shipbreaking plant in Sitakunda, Chittagong, Bangladesh, has risen to six.
Early in the morning of September 14, two of the injured died from their injuries, with burns of 70% and 50% respectively. In addition, two other workers with burns of 25% and 70% remain in critical condition.
At around 11:30 a.m. on September 7, an explosion and fire broke out at SN Corporation, one of the four green-certified shipbreaking yards in Bangladesh. At the time of the incident, 12 workers from SN Corporation were cutting the engine spaces of a partly destroyed former tanker. The tanker was named “MT SWARAJYA”.
The accident resulted in 12 injuries, eight of which were transferred to a high-level burns hospital for serious injuries, and six of those eight have now died.
