On August 30, Chengxi Shipyard, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), signed a contract for the construction of 22 80,000 DWT bulk carriers with a wholly-owned subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Development Co., Ltd, which set a new historical record for Chengxi Shipyard’s single contract amount.
The 80,000 DWT bulk carrier has an overall length of 229.95 meters, a beam of 32.26 meters, a design draft of 10.0 meters with a service speed of 15.5 knots. Classed by CCS, the bulk carrier is characterized by good economy, environmental protection, high degree of intelligence and wide cargo suitability, etc.
According to an announcement made by COSCO Shipping Development on the evening of August 30, the total transaction amount of the order is about RMB 6.873 billion (about US$966 million, excluding tax), which is expected to be delivered from January 2027 onwards.
In addition to the order for the 22 80,000 dwt bulk carriers, COSCO Shipping Development announced on August 30 another 20 methanol reserved environmental friendly bulk carriers to be constructed by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry’s subsidiaries, including COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) undertaken two 82,500 dwt bulk carriers, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian) undertaken 13 80,000 dwt bulk carriers, and COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Zhoushan) undertaken five 64,000 dwt bulk carriers, with the total transaction amounting to approximately RMB5,832 million (about US$829 million, excluding tax).
COSCO Shipping Development said that this project of investing in the construction of 42 bulk carriers and long-term leasing projects is an important milestone for the company to further solidify the foundation of its shipping leasing business and strengthen its value creation capability, as well as a prelude to further optimizing the allocation of resources and practicing sustainable development.
