SMDERI’s Dual-Fuel Engine Reduces Carbon Emissions by More Than 85 %

Recently, the CS27 ammonia/diesel dual-fuel engine independently developed and designed by Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research institute (SMDERI) passed the test verification.

The highest carbon reduction rate of the engine is more than 85%, the average effective pressure is BMEP≥2.2MPa, the highest thermal efficiency is more than 44%, and the overall technical indexes have reached the international advanced level. This marks a major breakthrough for SMDERI in the field of large bore marine ammonia/diesel dual-fuel engines, laying a solid foundation for real ship applications.

Based on the advanced ammonia single-cylinder and whole-engine integration verification platform in China, CS27 engine has successively broken through the key technologies of stable, reliable, efficient and low-emission combustion organization of ammonia-fueled medium-speed engine, high-concentration NOx emission control, as well as key technologies, such as Ammonia-fueled engine safety protection technology, providing a complete solution for the shipping industry to realize the goal of low-carbon and zero-carbon.

The engine is applicable to various types of coastal and inland waterway ship propulsion main engines such as container ships, bulk carriers, chemical tankers, offshore vessels, harbor work boats, etc., as well as various types of power generation auxiliary engines for ocean-going vessels. Its cylinder number is from 6 to 9 cylinders, power is from 1 to 3MW, and the highest carbon reduction rate using green ammonia is more than 85%, which can meet China’s inland waterway phase II emission requirements and IMO Tier III emission requirements.

SMDERI’s ammonia/diesel dual-fuel engine has made a significant breakthrough, which will fully promote the formation of new quality productivity in the ship power industry.
