Recently, the Grimaldi Group took delivery of the fifth G5-class multipurpose con-ro from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. After delivery, the vessel will be deployed on the North Europe-West Africa route soon.
The G5 series of con-ro multipurpose vessels is an upgraded version of the G4 series delivered by HD Hyundai Mipo to Grimaldi in 2014 and 2015. The new vessels have the same ro-ro carrying capacity but double the container capacity compared to the G4 series.
It is understood that Grimaldi has ordered a total of six G5 series con-ro multipurpose vessels from HD Hyundai Mipo, with one yet to be delivered. Three of them will be delivered in April, August and December 2023, named “Great Antwerp”, “Great Lagos” and “Great Tema”; two of them will be delivered in April and August 2024, named “Great Abidjan” and “Great Casablanca”.
With a length of 250 meters, a beam of 38 meters and a deadweight of 45,684 tons, the vessel is designed to be fully configured internally according to the customer’s requirements, to transport ro-ro cargoes of up to 4,700 meters in length, with a capacity of 2,500 CEU’s and 2,000 TEU’s, and is designed to incorporate a large number of technological solutions aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing the impact on the environment.
Grimaldi said the G5 series vessels can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 43 percent per ton of cargo transported, compared to other multipurpose vessels owned by the company.
