On August 29, COSCO Shipping Lines, a wholly-owned subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Holdings, and COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) signed a contract for the construction of 12 14,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel containerships in Shanghai.
The contracted 14,000TEU methanol dual-fuel containership is jointly designed by COSCO Shipping Lines, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry and Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC). It adopts innovative design and advanced technology, featuring strong adaptability to routes, large loading capacity of cold containers, green environmental protection, safety and intelligence.
With an overall length of 335.9 meters and a beam of 51 meters, the containership adopts an invisible bulbous bow and stern energy-saving devices. The main engine and generator are methanol dual-fuel engines and it is also equipped with the world’s largest capacity class permanent magnet shaft generator, bow windshield, the Group’s self-developed hull air lubrication system and intelligent ship system, which meets the EEDI Phase III energy efficiency targets and the latest cybersecurity regulations. When green methanol fuel is used, the level of greenhouse gas emissions will be significantly reduced, meeting the IMO’s visionary goal of greenhouse gas emission reductions in the shipping industry.
COSCO Shipping Holdings said that the ordering of 12 14,000TEU methanol dual-fuel containerships is another important initiative of the company in practicing the concept of green and low-carbon development and promoting the process of green fleet construction, which is beneficial to steadily increase the proportion of the company’s new energy and clean energy-powered ship capacity, reduce the impact of daily operations on the environment and ecology, and realize long-term sustainable development.
Meanwhile, as a leading global container liner company, COSCO Shipping Holdings always adheres to the customer-centered approach and continues to promote the structural optimization of the container fleet and the balanced layout of the global routes, in order to provide global customers with a more stable, reliable, safe and efficient full supply chain services.
The ordered 14,000TEU containerships with better navigational performance and a wider range of routes, can better meet the increasingly diversified transportation needs of customers and help the company to maintain the first echelon of the global container liner industry.
At present, COSCO Shipping Holdings mainly adopts the combination of new ships and upgrading and retrofitting of existing ships to accelerate the green and low-carbon transformation of the company’s fleet. In addition to ordering new ships, CCOSCO Shipping Holdings has signed contracts for methanol dual-fuel power conversion for eight ships, and is simultaneously pushing forward green development practices such as the operation of purely electric vessels and biofuel pilots, which have built up strong momentum for the company’s racing on the new race track.
