GSI completed the lifting of China’s largest Type B LNG tank

Recently, Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI) successfully completed the lifting operation of the largest Type B LNG tank in China.

At present, the mainstream LNG tanks in the market are membrane tanks and independent tanks, of which independent tanks are categorized into Type A, Type B and Type C according to IMO standards. There are two main Type B tanks applied in the shipping market: one is spherical tank, referred to as MOSS tank; the other is prismatic tank, referred to as SPB tank.

SPB tank integrates the advantages of membrane tank and MOSS tank, which ensures high volume utilization rate and low air draft, and also can effectively reduce liquid sloshing.

The Type B SPB tank installed on the 16,000 TEU dual-fuel container ship under construction by GSI is 22.2 meters long, 29.1 meters wide, 30.5 meters high, with a finished weight of about 1,400 tons, which is the largest Type B tank in China at present.

The smooth lifting of Type B cabin not only fills a technical gap of GSI, but also forms a systematic program demonstration and evaluation, as well as lifting and installation process documents, which will provide strong support for the construction of similar ships later.
