Recently, the onboard design of high-gravity carbon capture system independently developed by COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Technology (Weihai) (CHIT) has once again obtained the approval in principle (AIP) of Det Norske Veritas (DNV). This is the fourth AIP Certificate for the system after China Classification Society (CCS), RINA and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), which marks the system’s technological innovation has been widely recognized by the industry.
During the certification process, DNV’s expert team conducted a comprehensive assessment of the safety of crew and ship equipment based on the Guidelines for Carbon capture and storage on board ships (DNV-CG-0667), and examined in detail the feasibility of the shipborne hypergravity carbon capture system and its applicability on board the ship.
For each module of the system, DNV experts provided professional technical guidance, and finally confirmed that the system fully meets the requirements of DNV specifications.
In terms of system design, DNV experts provided suggestions on parameter monitoring, equipment maintenance and emergency handling of the system under ship’s operating conditions based on the existing process, which provided valuable technical support for the design of the system’s ship loading compatibility and laid a firm theoretical foundation for the future application on real ships.
In the next optimization phase, CHIT will further develop the upgrading program of the system process and control logic according to the application difficulties of the ship, combined with the performance characteristics of the target ship’s mainframe and the safety control logic, to improve the automation level of the system and the applicability of the real ship, to accelerate the application of the shipborne super gravity carbon capture technology, and to help the green transformation and sustainable development of the shipping industry.
