China’s first “ship-to-ship” LNG refueling for Ro-Ro ship at terminals

Recently, the LNG refueling service capacity of Shanghai Port has reached a new level.

From August 9 to 10, the Norwegian ro-ro ship “Höegh Aurora”, which made its maiden voyage, successfully completed the loading of 1,800 m³ of LNG fuel at Shanghai Nangang Terminal, which was the first time that a ro-ro ship carried out “ship-to-ship” refueling service at the terminal in China.

“Höegh Aurora” departed from its home port of Nantong, Jiangsu Province on August 8th to start its maiden voyage. As the world’s largest and most environmentally friendly Ro-Ro car carrier, “Höegh Aurora” has 16 decks with a total of about 9,100 vehicles and is equipped with one low-speed dual-fuel main engine and three dual-fuel generators, which can run on both LNG and conventional fuels. It also has DNV “Ammonia Ready” and “Methanol Ready” notations, which makes it the first carbon-neutral ship in the field of car carriers.

At 3:00 a.m. on August 9, “Höegh Aurora” berthed smoothly; then at 13:46 p.m., the LNG bunkering ship “Haigang Weilai” started to carry out the bunkering operation. By 10:30 a.m. on August 10, the “Höegh Aurora” safely left the berth.

It is worth mentioning that this is also the first time for the “Haigang Weilai” LNG bunkering ship to sail away from Yangshan waters to refuel international vessels berthing at Nangang Terminal. The successful refueling of “Höegh Aurora” signifies that Shanghai Port has successfully possessed the experience and capability of LNG refueling service for Ro-Ro ships in port.

The improvement of LNG refueling service capability is not the only thing. Just before “Haigang Weilai” LNG bunkering ship left Yangshan waters, “Huaihe Nengyuan Qihang” successfully completed loading 6,000 m3 of LNG fuel at 11:00 p.m. on August 7 at Yangshan Port LNG Terminal. This marks that Yangshan Port has the ability to replenish two LNG bunkering ships.

According to the introduction, “Huaihe Nengyuan Qihang” is the first river-sea direct 14,000 m3 liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering ship to be put into operation in China. With the addition of “Huaihe Nengyuan Qihang”, the green energy refilling capacity of Yangshan Port will be further enhanced, further consolidating the international leading position of Shanghai’s container hub port.

With the addition of “Huaihe Nengyuan Qihang”, the green energy refueling capacity of Yangshan Port will be further enhanced, further consolidating the international leading position of Shanghai’s container hub port, and enabling the construction of Shanghai International Shipping Center with the enhancement of port service capacity.
