Hudong-Zhonghua Awarded an Order for Five 13,000 TEU Dual-Fuel Large Containerships

On August 19, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), together with China Shipbuilding Trading Co. Ltd (CSTC), and Pacific International Lines (PIL) formally signed a contract for the construction of five 13,000 TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG), dual-fuel large-scale containerships.

This is another batch of large containership order received by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding after signing an order for four 14,000 TEU methanol-fueled reserved large containerships in June this year. So far, the shipyard has completed and held orders for nearly 100 large containerships, ranking among the top of the world’s major shipyards, and continuing to consolidate its position as a leader in the construction of ultra-large and large containerships.

Designed by Hudong-Zhonghua, it is a green and environmentally friendly containership tailor-made for the ship owner. With an overall length of 335 meters, a beam of 51 meters and a depth of 27.2 meters, the maximum capacity is up to 13,000 TEU and can carry 2,200 refrigerated containers. It is equipped with LNG dual-fuel power propulsion system and Hudong-Zhonghua’s self-developed 12,000 m³ B-type LNG fuel tanks, which boasts a long endurance of 22,000 nautical miles in gas mode.

The containership has excellent green performance, meeting the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III emission requirements and the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase III requirements. Fitted with the latest LNG dual-fuel main engine, the containership can reduce sulfur, fine particulate matter, NO2 and CO2 emissions compared to traditional heavy fuel oil and significantly reduce methane escape when using LNG as fuel.

Meanwhile, Hudong-Zhonghua also adopts the Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling (iCER) system to improve combustion efficiency and reduce emissions, and the bow of is equipped with an independently-designed windshield to further minimize the sailing resistance. These innovative technologies and designs enable the containership to be characterized by low overall energy consumption, high speed and excellent green environmental protection, especially on the basis of meeting the requirements of the most stringent international environmental protection regulations, which provides customers with a more efficient and economical maritime transportation solution.

It is reported that Hudong-Zhonghua is currently building the world’s largest 24,000 TEU-class dual-fuel and conventionally ultra-large containerships, 15,000 TEU and 13,000 TEU dual-fuel large containerships, etc. Furthermore, the 14,000 TEU methanol reserved large containership has also entered the detailed design and production preparation stage, with delivery scheduled to 2028 and beyond.

As the largest local shipping company in Southeast Asia, PIL takes container shipping as its core business and involves in container manufacturing and logistics and other diversified businesses, with its service network covering 90 countries and regions around the world.

The signing of this contract is the second time for CSTC to cooperate with PIL together with the shipyards under CSSC after two years, which fully reflects the strength of CSSC in the field of large-scale containership construction and design.
