Hanwha Ocean kicked off construction of 174,000 m³ LNG carrier

Recently, Hanwha Ocean (formerly Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering) held a steel-cutting ceremony for the second 174,000 m³ liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier built for Norwegian gas shipping company BW LNG.

With a cargo tank capacity of 174,000 m³ and scheduled for delivery in 2025, the LNG carrier is one of the four LNG carriers Hanwha Ocean will build for the Norwegian owner, with the first unit starting construction in November 2023.

The new LNG carriers will be equipped with MAN B&W MEGI dual-fuel engines, a complete re-liquefaction system, an air lubrication system and shaft generators for better fuel consumption and lower emissions. The marine compressed air system will be supplied by Norwegian supplier TMC Compressors and will offer energy savings of up to 40% compared to conventional compressors.

Earlier this year, BW LNG acquired two LNG carriers from Swedish shipowner Stena Bulk to further expand its fleet for an undisclosed price. The LNG carriers, named Stena Crystal Sky and Stena Clear Sky, have a cargo capacity of 174,000 m³ and are Hanwha Ocean’s 2011-built triple-fuel diesel-electric (TFDE) vessels, renamed BW ENN Crystal Sky and BW Clear Sky, respectively, and will be delivered directly to TotalEnergies and China’s ENN Energy

As of today, the size of BW LNG’s own fleet has reached 34 vessels, including 4 FSRUs and 4 newbuildings under construction by Hanwha Ocean. Notably, the 2 LNG carriers acquired from Stena Bulk may be converted to FSRUs in the future.
