Changhong International steel cut for Two 11,500 TEU dual fuel container ships

On August 15, Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard (Changhong International) held a warmly steel cutting ceremony for 7th and 8th 11,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships built for the world-renowned shipping company Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). This is another major node of the project following the completion of keel laying for the 3rd and 4th container ships on August 8, marking the continued and efficient advancement of the project.

With an overall length of 335 meters, a beam of 45.6 meters, a depth of 25 meters, and a design speed of 20 knots, the two container ships kicked off this time are classed by LR and BV respectively.

Developed independently by CIMC Ocean Engineering Design & Research Institute (CIMC ORIC), this series of container ships is a new generation of 10,000 TEU class dual-fuel container ships with complete intellectual property rights.

Adopting a double-island arrangement, the container ships is equipped with the largest C-type LNG fuel tank in its class. In both LNG and fuel oil modes, the ship’s range can meet the demand for a single round-trip on the classic China-Europe or China-US routes, which ensures the flexibility of the shipowner’s operation plan.

The ship features clean, environmentally friendly, low carbon emission characteristics, compared with existing ships of the same type, it can save about 5% of fuel, and the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is about 40% lower than the stringent Phase III emission baseline of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

In addition, the design is technologically forward-looking, not only adopting dual-power propulsion in the form of LNG and conventional fuel oil, but also adopting the industry’s most cutting-edge ammonia fuel “Ready” design.
