2 killed, 1 seriously injured in PSV explosion

Malaysian offshore shipowner Icon Offshore said in a statement on Monday (August 12), the company’s “Icon Amara” Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) exploded, resulting in two deaths and one serious injury.

According to Icon Offshore, the explosion on the PSV Icon Amara occurred at around 10:30 p.m. local time on August 2 on the Sapar Alpha platform near Bintulu, Malaysia. The explosion resulted in two deaths and serious injury to one crew member. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

Immediately after the incident, Icon Offshore initiated an emergency response to support the affected crew and their next of kin. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and our deepest sympathies to the injured and their families. The company is committed to offering all possible assistance during this difficult time,” the company said in a statement.

As to why the statement was released a week after the accident, Icon Offshore explained that the company is working with its customers and the relevant authorities to “ensure all information was accurate and appropriately handled.”
