Mawei Shipbuilding’s four 9,000DWT asphalt carriers formally took effect

Recently, Mawei Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Fujian Shipbuilding Industry Group, and COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers once again cooperated with its wholly-owned subsidiary, COSCO SHIPPING (Hong Kong), to sign four 9000DWT asphalt carriers. The total investment amount of the project is about $98 million and the price of a single vessel is about $24.5 million, which is expected to be delivered between October 2025 and August 2026, according to previous reports.

This is a new asphalt carrier after the century-old shipbuilding enterprise Mawei Shipbuilding joined hands with shipping giant COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers to build a blueprint for shipping, following the orders for 7,500 PCTC and 85,000 DWT pulp vessels signed by both parties.

The project’s 9,000 DWT class asphalt carriers, is a planned vessel of COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers ladder class. Classed by CCS, the asphalt carrier has an overall length of 119.8 meters, a beam of 21.2 meters, a depth of 11.2 meters, a design draught of 7.1 meters. It is equipped with a pre-propeller conduit to improve propulsion efficiency and a side- thruster cover to reduce the resistance of the side-thruster tube tunnels.

In the last two years, the overall stability of the asphalt carrier market continues to improve, most of the emerging market countries asphalt demand reflects a strong resilience. With the increasingly stringent environmental protection requirements and the gradual recovery of the global economy, asphalt carriers are facing new and old generations, and the market is in urgent need of a batch of new asphalt carriers to meet the requirements of the new specifications. Mawei Shipbuilding, with rich experience in asphalt shipbuilding, will take this batch of orders as an opportunity to further consolidate and strengthen the company’s position and strength in the field of asphalt shipbuilding.

The predecessor of COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers is Guangzhou Ocean Shipping Company, founded on April 27, 1961, which is the earliest state-owned ocean shipping enterprise established in New China, and is regarded as the birthplace and cradle of New China’s ocean shipping business.

COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers is mainly engaged in the transportation of specialized vessels and related businesses, with the strategic goal of “building a global leading specialized vessel company and realizing the transformation to ‘industry chain operator’ and ‘total solution provider'”, and is committed to building a world-class fleet of specialized vessels.
