HJ Shipbuilding & Construction delivered a 5500TEU methanol reserved containership

HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (formerly Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction) has recently delivered the 5,500 TEU methanol reserved containership “Colorado” to Norwegian container ship owner MPC Container Ships (MPCC). This containership is currently preparing for its maiden voyage and has signed a 7-year charter contract with ZIM Integrated Shipping Services.

The “Colorado” is the last 5,500 TEU methanol containership to be built by HJ Shipbuilding & Construction for MPCC, and its sister vessel is the “Mackenzie”. The contract for the construction of the two methanol containerships was signed in April 2022 at a price of $72.2 million each, with two options at that time.

The naming ceremony of “Colorado” and “Mackenzie” was held on May 23 this year on the same day. With a length of 255 meters and a beam of 37.3 meters, the containership adopts a methanol reserved design, which can be retrofitted to use methanol fuel in the future, reducing fuel consumption by about 40% and reaching an emission reduction target of up to 90%.

In addition to the 2 new built methanol reserved containerships from HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, MPCC will also take delivery of 2 x 1300TEU methanol dual-fuel powered containerships to be built by Sanfu Shipbuilding in the second half of 2024 in China. The parties signed a shipbuilding contract in 2022 at a cost of $39 million for a single ship.

At present, the first built 1,300 TEU methanol dual-fuel powered containership built by Sanfu Shipbuilding for MPCC was launched on June 21 this year, and will sign a chartering contract with Norwegian transportation company North Sea Container Line AS (NCL) after delivery.
