GTT Awarded Design Contract for Tank Design of One FLNG

France GTT announces that it has received, during the second quarter of 2024, an order from its partner the Korean shipyard Samsung Heavy Industries for the tank design of a new Floating Liquefied Natural Gas Unit (FLNG), on behalf of the ship-owner Cedar LNG.

GTT will design the tanks of this FLNG, which will have a total capacity of 180,000 m3, and will incorporate the Mark III Flex membrane containment system developed by GTT. GTT launched the Mark III, Mark III Flex membrane containment system to the market in 2008 and 2011 respectively, aiming to improve fuel transportation efficiency, which is a containment and insulation system directly supported by the hull structure.

According to previous news, Samsung Heavy Industries signed a contract for the construction of the Cedar FLNG on December 29, 2023, which was officially confirmed on June 25, 2024, with an order value of about 2.101 trillion won (about $1.5 billion).

According to a statement released by Samsung Heavy Industries last year, the FLNG is being contracted by a consortium consisting of Samsung Heavy Industries, which is responsible for the engineering of the FLNG hull, the LNG containment system, and the integration of the upper modules; and Black & Veatch, which is primarily responsible for the engineering of the FLNG hull as well as the design of the upper modules, and the Upper Module Design. In April this year, Samsung Heavy Industries and Black & Veatch announced the commencement of the Cedar FLNG front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract, which was awarded in February 2022.

The Cedar FLNG, built by Samsung Heavy Industries, will have a capacity of approximately 3 million tons per year and is planned to extract natural gas from the rich Montney Resource Area in northeastern B.C. The FLNG will be located near a Canadian LNG plant and will be powered by renewable energy sources in British Columbia.

The Cedar LNG project is understood to be a joint venture between Pembina Pipeline, a Canadian oil and gas company, and the Haisla Nation, an aboriginal people of British Columbia, Canada. On June 25, Cedar LNG Partners LP (Cedar LNG), a joint venture between the two companies, made a positive investment decision on the Cedar LNG project with a positive final investment decision.

The delivery of this FLNG is scheduled for the first quarter of 2028.
