Terntank exercised the option for one 15,000 DWT Chemical/Product Tanker at CMJL Yangzhou

Swedish tanker operator Terntank is further expanding its fleet and exercising an option on alternative vessel to a Chinese shipyard.

On July 5, Terntank announced the exercise of an option for one methanol reserved and wind-assisted propulsion 15,000 dwt oil and chemical tanker to China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Yangzhou (CMJL Yangzhou), with delivery expected to take place in July 2027, which is an alternative 15,000 dwt chemical/products tanker that was announced by the two parties on March 26, 2024.

It is understood that Terntank has placed its first order for this type of vessel with CMJL Yangzhou on November 29, 2022 with a quantity of 2+2 units, and the first vessel of the series is currently under construction and is expected to be delivered in March 2025.The cooperation between Terntank and CMJL has a long history, and the alternative vessel in force this time is the 11th vessel to be built by the cooperation between the two parties.

Designed by Kongsberg, the vessel can carry chemicals, oil and biofuels. The new vessel will be equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of running on MGO, biofuels and methanol; it will have an advanced hybrid battery system for peak shaving; and it will be equipped with wind-assisted propulsion as well as a shore power system.

Also, its methanol design reduces carbon emissions by 40%, and the inclusion of wind-assisted propulsion will further reduce emissions by 8%, significantly reducing its environmental impact.

Thanks to the low carbon and decarbonization potential of methanol, its energy efficiency design index (EEDI) is effectively designed to be in the range of 16-40%, meeting the requirements of Phase III by 2025.
