SDARI-designed VLOC has over 60% global market share

On July 3, Singapore Winning International Group and Hengli Group held a strategic cooperation signing ceremony and for the construction of six 325,000 DWT ore carriers. The ore carriers are designed by Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI) under China Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and constructed by Hengli Heavy Industries under Hengli Group.

This series of ore carriers have the remarkable features of “green, eco-friendly, energy-saving and safety”. In terms of operation, the ore carriers is reasonably arranged and designed to meet the special needs of the loading and unloading terminal, making it more flexible and controllable for loading and unloading operations. With special design and consideration for the cargo hold area, the cargo hold capacity is increased by 20-30% compared with the traditional ore carriers of this size, which improves the economy of the operation.

With an overall length of 329.99 meters, a beam of 60 meters, a depth of 30.50 meters, a structural draft of 22 meters and a speed of 13.9 knots, the WinningMax ore carrier can meet the requirements of Phase III of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI).

Classed by China Classification Society (CCS) and Det Norske Veritas (DNV), the energy consumption of the WinningMax is expected to be reduced by almost 50% in terms of tonne-nautical mileage compared to the Capesize vessels in the Baltic Sea. It is also methanol-fueled and equipped with 12,000 cubic meters of methanol fuel storage tanks, which will make it possible to achieve zero-carbon operation on all voyages in the future by using green methanol.

According to SDARI, from 230,000 DWT of ore carriers, 264,000 DWT of WOZMAX ore carriers, 300,000 DWT of ore carriers, 325,000 DWT of GUAIBAMAX ore carriers to 400,000 DWT of VALEMAX ore carriers, SDARI’s ore carrier series has formed a full range of ship type coverage from small to large.

Since 2012, SDARI has received orders for 83 Very Large Ore Carrier (VLOC) projects larger than 300,000 tons deadweight, with a domestic market share of 85% and a global market share of 61%.
