Korea’s first ship equipped with OCCS departs on the 3rd

Reporter Min Young-kyu = Korea’s first container ship equipped with facilities to capture and store carbon dioxide emitted from ships will depart on the 3rd and begin full-scale demonstration work.

Panasia, a company specializing in eco-friendly facilities, announced on the 2nd that it has successfully completed Korea’s first carbon dioxide capture and storage system (OCCS) project for ships with HMM, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Korea Register of Shipping at the Korea Made Shipyard in Mokpo, South Jeolla on the 2nd.

The project is to equip HMM’s 2,100 TEU (1 TEU is one 20-foot container) container ship ‘MONGLA’ with a facility that captures 1 ton of carbon dioxide per hour, up to 24 tons per day, and stores it in a liquid state. This is the world’s largest OCCS, Panasia said.

The carbon dioxide capture device was developed by Panasia, and the device for liquefying and storing the captured carbon dioxide was developed by Samsung Heavy Industries.

To this end, Panasia, Samsung Heavy Industries, HMM, and Korea Register of Shipping signed a ‘Ship Carbon Capture System Demonstration Business Agreement’ in April last year and started the project in earnest.

HMM and others plan to depart Mongla on the 3rd and conduct on-board demonstration studies from the 6th.

In addition, Panacea is developing various solutions to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and realize carbon neutrality, such as fuel supply systems such as methanol and ammonia, and power supplies for land.
