Hudong-Zhonghua delivered a 13,000 TEU containership, completing the half-year target ahead of schedule

On June 28, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), together with China Shipbuilding Trading (CSTC), formally named and delivered a 13,000 TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered dual-fueled large-scale containership series No. 5 “CMA CGM BELEM” built for France’s Duffy Marine Group. Thus, Hudong-Zhonghua has delivered 12 ships in the first half of this year, completing 60% of the annual plan. After completing the full-year order receiving task ahead of schedule on June 14 this year, Hudong-Zhonghua has realized the delivery of ships in the first half of the year ahead of schedule too.

Designed by Marine Design and Research Institute of China (MARIC) of CSSC, CMA CGM BELEM has an overall length of 336 meters, a beam of 51 meters, a depth of 26.8 meters, with a design service speed of 21 knots, and a maximum capacity of 13,200 TEUs. The containership adopts LNG dual-fuel power system and is equipped with LNG liquid cargo tanks with MARK Ⅲ liquid cargo containment system, with a capacity of 14,000 cubic meters.

It is also equipped with the world’s advanced CMD-WinGD9X9DF-2.0 main engine of CSSC’s own brand and the global new generation of Intelligent Controlled Exhaust Recirculation (ICER) system, which reduces methane escape in gas mode by 50% and greenhouse gas emissions by more than 28%.

The ship is installed with a huge wind deflector in the bow, which can save 2%~4% fuel consumption during actual operation; it is also installed with an energy-saving deflector in the stern, which can improve the propeller propulsion efficiency, reduce the energy consumption by about 1.5%, and significantly reduce the carbon dioxide emission, which characterized by flexible container loading, leading technology, energy saving and environmental protection. It is reported that a total of six containerships of this series are being built, and according to the plan, the 6th unit will be delivered in August this year.

This year, Hudong-Zhonghua’s production and operation have gone hand in hand with remarkable achievements.

In terms of operation, Hudong-Zhonghua announced on April 29th that it had successfully signed an order for 18 of the world’s largest 271,000 cubic meters ultra-large LNG carriers, which surprised the world. On June 14th, the company signed 4 14,000 TEU containerships with methanol fuel reservation, which enriched the company’s “green family tree” of large containerships.

In terms of production, the company set a new record of the fastest sea trials of large LNG carriers in the world, and for the first time achieved a new domestic record of delivering two large LNG carriers in a single month, delivering the best answer sheet for the production and operation in the first half of 2024 with excellent performance, and at the same time laying a solid foundation for the completion of the annual production and operation tasks and objectives.
