HD Hyundai has completed basic certification of ship cybersecurity technology from six global shipbuilders for the first time in Korea, according to Maeil Business Newspaper.
HD Hyundai announced on the 25th that it has recently obtained basic certification for the cyber resilience technology of liquefied natural gas (LNG) floating storage and recapitalization (FSRU) from Lloyd’s Shipment and the Japan Maritime Cooperative Association and has completed the certification of six major global ships.
Previously, HD Hyundai obtained basic certification for ‘ship cyber resilience technology procedures and methodologies’ from four ships: French, Norwegian, and U.S. ships, starting with Korean ships in May last year. The six major shipping lines are members of the International Shipping Association (IACS), which has an absolute influence on the shipbuilding and shipping industries, such as establishing international standards related to the inspection and certification of ships.
Ship cyber resilience is a technology that protects ships from cyber threats and minimizes the damage of information security accidents that have already occurred, thereby increasing the operational stability of ships. Recently, as various systems in ships have been integrated and digitized, threats against security attacks such as hacking and ransomware are increasing, the importance of cyber resilience is being emphasized worldwide.
The International Shipping Association has made it mandatory to secure cyber resilience technology for all shipbuilding contracts signed from next month. In response to this, HD Hyundai has conducted joint development projects with global leaders since last year to design a cyber resilience network and complete the establishment of a response system.
An HD Hyundai official said, “For the safety of digitalized ships, more enhanced cybersecurity technology is required. HD Hyundai plans to maintain its status as the world’s No. 1 shipbuilder with the highest level of cybersecurity technology.”
Meanwhile, HD Hyundai is leading the ship cybersecurity technology by launching the ship cybersecurity solution brand “High Secure” through HD Hyundai Marine Solutions, a comprehensive solution company in the marine sector, and actually applying it to LNG FSRU under construction.
