HD Hyundai Samho names a 174,000 m³ LNG vessel

On June 23, Hyundai Glovis, the shipping and logistics arm of South Korean automotive giant Hyundai Motor Group, announced the naming ceremony for the Woodside Scarlet Ibis, a 174,000 m³ LNG carrier built by HD Hyundai Samho.

Kyu-bok Lee, Chief Executive Officer of Hyundai Glovis, and Mark Abbotsford, Vice President of Woodside Energy Australia, attended the naming ceremony. The Woodside Scarlet Ibis is 292 meters in length and has a cargo capacity of 174,000 cubic meters. After delivery, the LNG carrier will fulfill an LNG transportation contract with Woodside Energy, a 15-year charter for the transportation of natural gas worldwide.

Currently, the marine transportation market for liquefied natural gas (LNG) has a high potential for growth. Low-emission energy sources such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen and ammonia are emerging as the global demand for carbon neutrality continues to rise.Goldman Sachs Research expects global LNG supply to increase by 80 percent by 2030.

Hyundai Glovis plans to strengthen its global market position by demonstrating its competitiveness in natural gas shipping. The company is carefully laying out the LNG transportation market to secure new growth engines and diversify its shipping business capabilities centered on car transportation.

A Hyundai Glovis associate said, “The company will accelerate the development of its natural gas marine transportation business and will work to secure marine transportation capacity for hydrogen and ammonia, which are seen as future energy sources.”
