China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) has announced an order for two 210,000 dwt bulk carriers from Qingdao Yangfan Shipbuilding (Qingdao Yangfan), following an order for eight 210,000 dwt Newcastlemax bulk carriers from New Times Shipbuilding.
In the evening of June 26, CMES released the Announcement for the Construction of New Capesize Bulk Carriers.
The announcement disclosed that recently, Hong Kong Ming Wah Shipping, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CMES, and Qingdao Yangfan have signed the Ship Ordering Agreement for the construction of two 210,000 dwt Newcastlemax bulk carriers, with an order value of about RMB 1.05 billion. The new vessels will be equipped with desulphurization scrubbers and a number of energy-saving and eco-friendly designs, and will be delivered by Qingdao Yangfan in the second half of 2027.
CMES said that in the context of global carbon neutrality, ordering a new generation of energy-saving and eco-friendly large bulk carriers is in line with the company’s development strategy to meet the needs of the company’s bulk fleet’s global operation and sustainable development, and can realize the replacement and supplementation of the company’s bulk bulk carrier fleet.
The energy consumption level of this new generation 210,000 dwt bulk carrier will be significantly better than that of CMES’s existing bulk carriers of the same type, which is the company’s landmark step in practicing the concept of “green shipping”, and will contribute to the long-term goal of “carbon neutrality” for the global shipping industry, especially for the bulk cargo transportation industry. It will also contribute to the global shipping industry, especially the bulk transportation industry, to realize the long-term goal of “carbon neutrality”.
The bulk carriers ordered by CMES since last year will be delivered one after another from 2025, by which time the age structure of the company’s bulk carrier fleet will be significantly optimized and the size of its own fleet will be steadily and moderately expanded.
It is worth noting that the above two 210,000 dwt bulk carriers are the 2nd Newcastlemax bulk carrier order announced by CMES this month.
On June 13, CMES announced that Hong Kong Ming Wah Shipping has signed a contract with New Times Shipbuilding for the construction of eight 210,000 dwt Newcastlemax bulk carriers, with a total cost of about RMB 4.4 billion. The new shipbuildings are equipped with desulfurization scrubber towers and a number of energy-saving and eco-friendly designs, and will be delivered from 2028 onwards.
