Recently, the John T. Essberger Group, a German shipping company, held a naming ceremony for two 6,600 dwt LNG-powered stainless steel chemical tankers, the Eberhart Essberger and the Heinrich Essberger.
The two new shipbuildings named are the third and fourth in a series of four LNG dual-fuel powered chemical tankers being built by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Yangzhou (CMJL Yangzhou) for the John T. Essberger Group. In December 2023, a naming ceremony was held for the first chemical tanker in the series, the Liselotte Essberge.
John T. Essberger announced on May 18, 2021 an order for 4+4 6,600 dwt LNG dual fuel powered stainless steel chemical tankers from CCMJL Yangzhou, with deliveries expected to start from mid-2023, to be operated by E&S Tankers.
As an IMO Type II stainless steel chemical tanker, it is equipped with a dual-fuel LNG propulsion system and is certified to Finnish/Swedish 1A Ice Class. It has an overall length of 119.9 meters, a beam of 18 meters, a depth of 9.2 meters, a structural draft of 6.5 meters with a range of 6,500 nautical miles. Designed by FKAB, the vessel will mainly sail to Europe after it is put into operation, to realize the upgrading of the shipowner company’s capacity and enhance its competitiveness in the market segment.
The John T. Essberger Group said the new shipbuilding was able to significantly improve energy efficiency by at least 30% through optimization in hull design and equipments, as well as the ability to use shore power connections. German engine manufacturer MAN Energy Solutions is responsible for providing the integrated HyProp ECO propulsion solution.
As a new generation of eco-friendly and energy-saving chemical tankers, this series of chemical tankers meets the TIER III emission requirements. Its technical and economic indexes and performance have leading advantages among small chemical tankers of the same class, which is in line with the trend of green development of international shipping industry.
