Recently, Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), together with China Shipbuilding Trading (CSTC), signed a construction contract for a 41,000 cbm ammonia dual-fuel-powered LPG/liquid ammonia carrier with Tianjin Southwest Marine Limited, taking the lead in the construction of green-fueled ships.
With a length of 179.9 meters, a beam of 30 meters and a depth of 18.85 meters, this ammonia dual-fuel LPG/liquid ammonia carrier is equipped with three A-type liquid cargo tanks and two deck tanks, designed for a temperature of minus 50 degrees Celsius, which can load two kinds of cargoes at the same time.
It is equipped with ammonia dual-fuel main engine and ammonia fuel gas supply system, which meets the requirements of T-III and EEDI-III stage. It can provide customers with more operation options, has strong market competitiveness, which is an advanced liquid ammonia transportation ship in China and even in the world.
Since ammonia has a lower energy density than fuel oil and the volume of the fuel tank is more than three times that of a traditional fuel tank, special fuel tanks and gas supply systems are needed to operate in ships, while the consequences of ammonia leakage are unimaginable. At present, the application of ammonia fuel on ships is still in the primary stage, and the related technology and equipments are not mature enough, which brings a lot of unknown challenges to the production of this type of ship.
Under the background of green shipping, Huangpu Wenchong gives full play to its advantages in the field of small and medium-sized gas carriers, based on the market trend and customer needs, and promotes the company to continue to plough into the market of new energy ships, such as ammonia, LNG and methanol fuels, to help the shipping industry develop in a high-quality and low-carbon manner.
This project, as one of the first ammonia dual-fuel medium-sized LPG/liquid ammonia carrier projects in China, is another successful cooperation between Huangpu Wenchong and Southwest Marine following the signing of the first 25,000 cbm ammonia dual-fuel LPG/liquid ammonia carrier project between the two parties in April.
