New LNG-powered containership joins CMA CGM’s fleet

Recently, a naming and delivery ceremony was held for CMA CGM Tivoli, a 2,000 TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered dual-fuel feeder containership built by HD Hyundai Mipo for French shipping giant CMA CGM.

“CMA CGM Tivoli” is the fourth in a series of 10 2,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel powered feeder containerships to be built by HD Hyundai Mipo for CMA CGM, with a shipbuilding contract signed in November 2021 valued at US$627.7 million. This series of ships is designed for the Northern European feeder service. The first ship, CMA CGM MERMAID, was delivered in February 2024, and the remaining six units are scheduled for delivery in January 2025.

With a new aspect ratio of 204.29 meters in length and 29.6 meters in width, the containership is designed to improve the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic performance. It further improves hydrodynamic efficiency with its innovative inverted straight bow and integrated bow bulb, a design that is claimed to reduce fuel consumption by about 15 % per trip. Meanwhile, it improves cargo loading capacity by increasing the number of refrigerated containers.

This series of containerships is powered by 12 MW MAN LNG dual-fuel engines. They will also be equipped with an alternator coupled to the main propulsion engine to ensure that the required energy is supplied to the electrical systems during the voyage.

It is worth noting that one of its greatest innovations will be a hydrogen fuel cell, to be installed in the last of the series of containerships (to be delivered in January 2025), a 1 MW fuel cell powered by hydrogen that ensures zero emissions when it is berthed.

CMA CGM said the delivery of the CMA CGM Tivoli is part of its fleet renewal program, which has seen an investment of more than $15 billion and is part of CMA CGM’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
