Sirius Shipping seals charter deal with Preem for two methanol-ready tankers

Preem Shipping has agreed with the Swedish shipping company Sirius Shipping to charter two of their future-proof tankers on time charter. When these two new-build sister vessels are delivered, they will form the foundation of Preems next-generation transport system, performing safe and sustainable maritime transportation of renewable feedstock as well as finished products, with a significantly lower environmental impact than previous vessel generations.

“We look forward to taking delivery of the two sister ships, a further result of our long collaboration with Sirius Shipping. Preem has high ambitions to reduce its environmental impact and these two vessels will play an important role in our challenge to reach climate neutrality by 2035. By investing in new and modern tankers, Preem shows its commitment to sustainability and safety in shipping. At the same time, we support our customers in reaching their challenging goals”, says Daniel Berndolf, head of the shipping department at Preem.

For Preem’s sea transportations, “just in time” is applied, which means that the ships adjust their speed to minimize the time for anchoring at refineries and ports. This contributes to lower fuel consumption, increased safety and the least possible environmental impact.

The two tankers will be long-term chartered by Preem to mainly distribute finished products but also to be able to supply the refineries with renewable feedstock. The two sisters will fly the Swedish flag with home port Donsö in the Gothenburg archipelago and will be delivered to Preem in the second half of 2026.

The Sirius Evolution 15K is first-class designed and equipped with high demands on safety, quality and efficiency, with a particularly strong focus on long-term sustainability and low environmental impact. The vessels are equipped with a 2-stroke main engine that can be converted for methanol operation, battery back-up and shore power connection. With their high technical configuration and state-of-the-art design of underwater hull, rudder and propeller, these vessels have a calculated EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) of 5.50 against the requirement for EEDI of 8.94, i.e. approx. 39% lower than the regulatory requirement in 2025. The advanced cargo handling system makes these ships particularly well suited also for the various renewable raw materials that make up the fuels of today and the future.

“These efficient Sirius Evolution 15K vessels in Preems transport system will make a difference for both the environment and operating economics”, says Jonas Backman, CEO at Sirius Shipping.
